All individuals getting tested for HIV will receive a free pair of tickets to the June 28th Chivas USA game. HIV testing and counseling services will be provided by JWCH Institute.
Organizers hope to educate community members about the importance of HIV testing. Early detection can lead to a longer life span and better quality of life for individuals living with HIV states Eddie Martinez, associate director of The Wall Las Memorias Project. The Wall Las Memorias soccer testing initiative is also supported by the City of Los Angeles AIDS Coordinators Office, HealthNet and Super Estrella 107.1 FM.
The City of Los Angeles has recently launched an HIV testing initiative with a goal to test 1 million people by 2011. City leaders hope to increase testing availability in communities with high demand for testing, by reaching many who are underserved due to current testing systems, particularly in communities of color.
Founded in 1993, the mission of The Wall Las Memorias Project is to preserve the AIDS monument as an inspirational tool to educate the community about cultural denial, HIV/AIDS and to promote activism and healthy living. Agency programs include outreach and prevention services targeting individuals at high risk, families and Latino communities of faith.
Tickets for the June 28th game are also on sale at The Wall Las Memorias Project for $20 ($32 value). Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the educational programs of The Wall Las Memorias Project. For more information on HIV testing and or to purchase tickets please call 323-257-1056.
